Brief Account of Cixi

 

         Cixi city is located off the south bank of Hangzhou Bay where the trans-ocean bridge is under building. It is next to Ningbo in the southeast and Yuyao in the southwest. In the north is Shanghai that is on the other side of the ocean. Cixi is just in the center of Shanghai, Gangzhou and Ningbo. It is not only the coastal Open Economic Zones but also one of the new emerging cities in Yangtze delta. The whole area of Cixi is 1154m 2 with a population of 10,006,000 in its 17 towns and 3 sub district. The local government is in Hushan District.
         Cixi has a very long history. It belongs to Yue in the Spring and Autumn Dynasty. And became a town in the Qin Dynasty which located in nowadays' Ci City. The reason why it is named Cixi is because there was a
        brook on the south part of the town and also a legend in Han Dynasty named Loving Mother (Ci) Filial Son with a hero called Dong An. In 1954,the area was rearranged and was composed of three north parts of Ningbo, Yuyao and Zhenhai with a popular name SanBei (Three Norths). In October1988, Cixi became a city instead of a county. The natural conditions in Cixi are very favorable together with the distinctive four seasons, a all-year-round mild and humidity weather. It belongs to North Tropical Monsoon Zone. The south part of Cixi is hills area with various trees and fruit trees. The Middle West is a wide plain with rich soil and specialties. The north part is Hangzhou Bay with a 77kilometers long coastal line where the ocean resource is very rich. It also owns the richest potential soil source in Zhejiang Province because there are still 66,600,000m 2 for exploring. There are also large numbers of famous persons in the history with rich and generous cultural background, such as the gentleman Guang Yan in Han Dynasty, the calligrapher Shinan Yu in Tang Dynasty, philosopher Zhen Huang in South Song Dynasty, scholar Shiqi Gao in Qing Dynasty, Revolutionary Zonghan Ma, Educator Xianjiang Yang, artist Zhifu Chen, patriotic overseas Chinese Jintang Wu in modern history, all of whom are well known. Many historical relics also exist in Cixi, such as two state-protected places: Shanglin HuYue and the former residence of Qiaqing Yu, and also Wulei Temple in east Zhejiang, Da Peng hill site where Xu Fu in Qin Dynasty started his traveling to the east. The culture of reclaiming land land from marshes and the celadon culture can go back to the ancient times, especially the well known SiQian culture created by the diligent and intelligent people of Cixi during the reform and open period.
